CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species.
Malaysia is a member country of CITES and is committed to implementing the provisions of the convention to protect its wildlife and biodiversity. In Malaysia, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is responsible for the implementation of CITES. They enforce the regulations on the import, export, and re-export of wildlife and plants covered by CITES in accordance with the country’s legislation. This includes issuing permits and certificates to ensure that the trade is legal and sustainable.
